CURATORSHIP AND DESIGN «HUMAN TRACES / WORLD HERITAGE» EXHIBITION

Aalto2 / Alvar Aalto Museum + Museum of Central Finland, Jyväskylä, Finland.

Human kind has left traces during its history in the landscape, the built environment, objects and culture. Time and further human action tend to blur and eventually erase the evidence of our past. When valued as our heritage, these traces of our history help us to understand our past collectively and preserve important information for future generations.

The exhibition displays significant elements of the global and local World Heritage, presenting both material and immaterial heritage and ranging from the Great Wall of China via the culture of the Finnish Sauna to modern architecture, which it relates to the work of Alvar Aalto. The temporary exhibition is displayed throughout the Aalto2 Museum, accompanying the visitor along the whole complex and forming a sequence of five micro-exhibitions that present the diversity of our built and cultural heritage.

The exhibition is composed of wooden door-like frames. These structures form parts of walls, corners and even rooms, displaying the exhibition into five different themes organized around the idea of heritage. Each section has its own particular layout corresponding to the surrounding space and the exhibited material. To highlight the specific identity of each theme, we have used colours inspired by Alvar Aalto’s work.
